The Halloween Make-Up Tutorial
Hallo Hallo Hallo~ween!:
Come to the Dark Side…we have cookies

This Halloween, we show you how to create that evil witchy look and have your friends talking about your awesome getup for weeks to come!

Gloria Lee
by Gloria Lee

Shiver me timbers! That time of the year is upon us again. And yes, me lovelies, it's yet another excuse for us young things to dress up and make merry! Whether you'll be in costume or just wearing your sexiest party duds, we're going to show you how to rock this Halloween and have your friends talking about your awesome getup for weeks to come!

What do you think of when you see the word Halloween? Ghosts, ghouls and all things spooky? Paying to get yourself scared witless at 'haunted houses'? Or even better, crashing lecture in your Darth Vader costume and doing your best impersonation of "Luke, I am your father"…in Hokkien! Whatever you plan to be on this day of uninhibited sartorial craziness, here's the 1st of two looks just for you, demonstrated in video by your very own beauty writer.

For the lot of you who are going goth/witchy or anything evil and menacing, read on. Lots of black, crazy eyeliner and dark sexy colours are just what you need while drawing up plans for world domination in your secret hideaway. (Click here for the tutorial on how to create the mystical fairy look.)

Your potions ingredients-

Eyeshadow

Two eyeshadow colours, one dark colour and black. The colour is up to you, as long as it exudes that dark mysterious vibe.

Eyeliner

We are going for black. Pencil for drawing, liquid for setting (this helps the look last longer and minimises smudging).

Mascara

For that smouldering electrifying stare.

Brow colour

Pencil, liquid or powder.

Foundation and concealer

Preferably slightly lighter than your usual. Evil villains aren't exactly known for their healthy glowing good looks.

Bronzer

For that chiseled, sunken air of menace

Lip Colour

Matte red or dark purple. Neutrals are for wimps.

How to brew evil:

Loading the player ...
  1. Dab the dark colour on the inner half of your lid, followed by the black on the outer half. Blend the border between the two and smoke out the black into a winged shape. Clean up any stray shadow with a cotton bud dampened with makeup remover.

  2. Line your eyes and don't forget the waterline! It'll look weird if you leave it bare.

  3. Apply mascara. Don't forget to wiggle brush to separate lashes. You can do up to three coats if you want. Nothing can make this look more OTT than it already is.

  4. Fill in your brows, and feel free to make it darker than you usually would. It balances the strong eye makeup and ups the 'grr' factor.

  5. Apply foundation. If you're using a liquid formula, do set with loose powder unless you want the streaky makeup effect.

  6. Dab concealer on your blemishes and the area around your nose to cover redness. Scary and pimples don't work very well together. If you have dark circles, leave them be; they'll add to your air of creepiness.

  7. Suck in your cheeks and sweep bronzer right where the hollows are. Dab some on both sides of the bridge of your nose. This adds dimension to your face. Good if you dig the gaunt look. Skip this step if you just want ghostly paleness.

  8. Apply lip colour. Add a touch of lip gloss in the centre of your lower lip for additional poutiness.

  9. Have fun!

Suggested tools for ye fairy-in-the-making:

Urban Decay Sustainable Shadow Box, $63, Sephora

The price tag may be offputting, but it has 10 eyeshadows with excellent colour payoff (that means it gives a good strong wash of colour instead of watery halfhearted crap). And it includes a mini bottle of the brand's much feted Eyeshadow Primer Potion, which maximises the duration of your eye makeup. The shades are wearable for everyday looks.

With lots of mix-and-match options, we'd say it has plenty of mileage beyond Halloween.

Urban Decay Urban Lash in Groupie, $26, Sephora

This set of false lashes can be stuck onto our lashes at a slanty angle as demonstrated in the video.

The purple accents also tie in nicely with the evil look.

So far, this is the only set of false lashes that is able to achieve the effect we want at a relatively affordable price.

Canmake Shading Powder, $22.90, Watsons

This is a matte bronzer, ideal for the evil look we are crreating. Glittery villains are hardly threatening, unless you're a Twilight fan.

It also doubles up as a nice brown eyeshadow for your day look.

Given its price tag, this is quite a steal.

Maybelline Moisture Extreme Lipcolour in Summer Sunset, $15.90, Watsons and Guardian

This shade of beautiful rich red plays up the pale skin for the evil look. It doesn't dry out your lips and is affordable. What more can you ask for?
