I thought the skill sets have changed rather dramatically. Nowadays, it's like a lot is expected from a graduate, regardless of whether you are from a poly or a university. People just expect all labour to know something about everything.

I don't really like reading about research papers. I believe every case is unique and the skill sets required are difficult to generalize as well. But I guess the trend is going towards being cross trained.
