2006 was a year marked by highs and lows of campus politics juxtaposed against a burgeoning campus night life. Funkygrad sifts through the fug of memories saturated with sweat, tears and academic torment. We reveal the most contentious issues that took place on campus and the best moments of student life.

Events

Best Orientation Camp - NUS Arts Camp 2006

Legend has it that the best-lookers and most outrageous antics convene annually at NUS's orientation for freshmen of the faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, for a week of unparalleled revelry and mayhem. We sent our spies to get the scoop earlier this July, and they have since defected for good.

Well, we guess it ain't a myth then.

Best Talent Time Competition - Impressario 2006

Since the dawn of amateur singing amongst local tertiary circles, no one has managed to knocked Impressario - organised by NTU's CAC - off the top spot for producing the most number of artistes who managed to 'make it'. The more famous ones include Celest Chong, Chai Chun Jia and Hong Junyang.

Best Production - The Sword has Two Edges, SMU

Opening to a full-house crowd (extremely rare for campus productions), this alternative take of a period drama staged in a tent like a Chinese Wayang Opera brought the audience through a nostalgic experience.

A special stage under a fully enclosed tent was constructed in the middle of the realigned Stamford Road; a throwback to the olden days of wayang opera, as well as to recreate the look and feel of an ancient China reminiscent of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms era.

The refreshing production, advised by the esteemed Dr Margaret Chan, deserves kudos for the bold experimentation!

Most Gravity-Defying Event - Cheerobics, NTU

The annual event just gets bigger, higher and more death-defying each year as varsity teams all over the island compete for the title.

Most Spirited Event - Funkamania, NUS

One of the most adrenalin pumping events congregated by hardcore varsity loyalists this year, the annual dance competition is unrivalled at getting varsity team cheerleaders in a raging fit. With huge placards, hoarse voices, chartered buses and varsity team shirts, you'd almost think its the annual cheerleading competitions.

Most Inspiring event - La Connection Francaise, SMU

1000km in 18 days on a bicycle.

7 guys and 4 girls embarked on the journey of their lifetime cycling as they cycled on the same course that Lance Armstrong has conquered with immense tenacity.

Their resilience and fortitude to overcome the arduous trainings and obstacles makes us ashamed of spending most afternoons catching reruns of "Where are you, Scooby Doo".

Best Crowd - Girl's Nation Dance Battle, NUS, NTU, SMU, Studio Wu, Funkygrad.com

It was a rare event when we actually saw people getting dressed up for the hip hop event without being asked to. We spotted fashionistas in ghetto chic, fly boys 'Bling it on' and Justin Timberlake protege types. Needless to say, the crowd (made up mostly of hip hop aficionados) grooved effortlessly playing on the decks over at Zouk.

Hottest Dancefloor - Girl's Nation Dance Battle, NUS, NTU, SMU, Studio Wu, Funkygrad.com

Leopard prints, latex hotpants and lots of fur. Throw in Pussycat Doll proteges and sexy routines akin to Korean popstar Rain videos, the dancers on stage were effortless in getting everyone sweltering under the collar.

Most Good-Lookers - SIM-UOL Pageant

Low waist dresses and hip-hugging outfits, coupled with svelte physiques and gorgeous faces, the sell-out event at China Black takes the cake.

On Campus

Personality with the Highest Webhits - Peggy Chang, NTU

No surprise there, the first swimsuit interview on Funkgrad garnered a record-setting 28,000 page views on the first day it was published, and more than a million by the end of the month. With a sun-kissed tan and charming mega-watt smile, our girl went on to win 2nd runner-up at the recent Newpaper Face 2006. We smell more good things to come from this sassy babe! Remember, you spotted her here first!

Personality to Watch - Jade Seah, SMU

Now an alumni of SMU, the accounts executive at an advertising firm was 1st runner-up at the Miss Singapore Universe 2006. Sassy personality with the brains and looks to match, we reckon the Sony Vaio ambassador will soon be a regular fixture on the local media scene.

Hottest Campus Fashion Trend -Vintage

We're psyched that campus fashionistas are bringing Vintage back! With chic dresses, belted tops for the ladies, and cool vintage rocker tees and converse shoes for the laddies, they've definitely brought up undergrads' stinky reputations for their sartorial sense. Boos to the annual ' Undergrads wear retarded crap to school' reports on the national daily!

Favourite Fashion Label - Levi's

Everyone seems to have a pair of them. It can be assumed to be the de facto 'must-have' to 'fit-in'. Every Jack and Jill, Lian and Beng on campus struts around in one. Literally, one pair. The beauty of denim is its daily convenience and ubiquity. No one questions if it's the same pair, nor dare probe when was the last time you washed them. Perfect for undergrads perpetually late for tutorials and hostelites who are too lazy to do the laundry. Might as well invest in a 'branded' one.

Favourite Footwear -Havaianas

Lauded for its outstanding resilience and versatility, the rubber is comfortable enough for the 100m speed dash to the exam hall, yet chic enough to strut around town after school. Perfect for daily use, rain or shine.

Most Seen Accessory -Fujitsu laptops

With the aggressive annual roadshows during Orientation Week, coupled with unbeatable price plans, loans and freebies, anyone who's anyone on campus - regardless of your faculty, or whether you have use for it in the first place - can be seen toting a Fujitsu laptop. Yea, you may see the occasional Mac or Sony Vaio, but Fujitsu's economical value wins our hearts hands-down.

Favourite Campus Radio - NTU's Fusion Radio
(Cutting it close: SMU's Bras Brasah Brudders)

With the turntable decks helmed by students trained from the School of Communications and Informations, they actually have a grade to keep, academic units to earn and a whole barrage of connections for exclusive content and even roadshows -which means plenty of freebies and concert ticket giveaways! You can even catch their broadcasts streaming over the net! We're lovin' it!

Favourite Student Club - NTU Cultural Activities Club (CAC)

Now, this was a tough poll. As one of NTU's largest umbrella student organisations (the other 2 being the Students' Union and Sports Club), they're a committee overseeing all of the cultural and entertainment student clubs in NTU. What got at our heart strings were their philanthropic efforts at Arts For the Heart to raise fund for the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund - a 2-day public fund-raising event.

Like it wasn't enough to ruin your tutorial attendance (and grades) for the semester, they made it part of the inaugural Nanyang Arts Festival 2006, where 7 massive public events (the likes of Cheerobics and Impressario) were taking place almost concurrently in the same period. On top of it all, they're credited for hosting campus concerts with popular acts like F.I.R. We take our hats off to the CAC people for pulling the ginormous feat off with professionalism!

Student Hangout Operated by Students - Frujch, SMU
(Cutting it close: Munchie Munkeys, NUS)

You're probably not the only one who still has trouble pronouncing it. We just call it Shermeen's Café (because Shermeen writes for Funkygrad!). Opened earlier this year by enterprising year 3 SMU students - Shermeen, Shalini and Nabilah - it's SMU's first student-managed enterprise.

Located in the School of Information Systems, it boasts an uber cool cafe concept with lush interiors and billard tables for a mid school day chillout. We only wish security wasn't so tight on non-SMU students.

Most Impressive Carpark - NTU South Spine, Carpark B

Now we're not talking about well-tarred roads or complimentary in-house valet. We'd just like to put in a special mention on the staggering increase in flashy convertibles and vintage automobiles parked daily at the once-friendly South Spine Carpark. Some say the spectacle could rival the 'atas' carpark at the Ministry of Sound. A Porsche or two soon became a mundane sight - what horror! Rumoured to be owned by wealthy business freshmen, we have sent our writers to snoop around and leave namecards on windscreens for potential tete-a-tetes. To be continued.

Favourite Campus Food Stall - NTU Japanese Food Stall, Canteen A (Cutting it close: Western Food Stall, NUS Business)

Regardless of your faculty or tutorial location, all and sundry flock to Canteen A for their regular dose of Unagi Don. Long queues are common but absolutely worth the wait with its cheap prices, tantalising meals and friendly service. They even offer half-prices during after-school hours! Woot!

Biggest Hoo-hah - NUS's School Of Business Commercials

Remember the one about the 'X'? Or the one with the caucasian girl?
Yeap....not planning on going into it either.

Most Contentious Issues On Campus in 2006

  1. Fee Hike: Well, this issue is in the running for 2007 too. The final wave of increment is expected once more next semester. So, what are YOU doing about it?
  2. NTU lecturers speak 'no good' Engrish: With the magnitude to spark about a month's worth of fodder in the national daily, coupled with an anticipated on-campus student demonstration, the buzz fizzled off to a twitch-less unfortunate death.
  3. SIM accuses public of not taking them as legit undergrads: Ongoing debate still taking place in the forum.
  4. Public issues wake up call for SMU: How long will it take before the hype fizzes out?
  5. RJC blogger gets slapped in her 'elite, uncaring face' by netizens: an enraged response to another blog commentary by a Derek Wee, lamenting on the cynical realities of being Singaporean; the daughter of an MP and recipient of the Prime Minister's book prize suffered public backlash for her 2 cents worth. Gulp.

NTU

First was the 300 Herman Miller Aeron chairs, then students started complaining about Engrish standards of lecturers. To round up the year, established student leader became a Hall 8 peeping tom. At least they've got the hilarious 'sexy lecturer' on Youtube to sanitise the bucket load of dirty laundry. Nonetheless, we send our deepest sympathies to the Corporate Communications officers at NTU.

What we want more of

  • E-learning lectures
  • Increased transparency of school policies
  • Corporate sponsorship: more freebies on campus that are actually useful
  • Creative corporate marketing: It would be nice to see corporate marketers getting more creative ,and venture out of the same old goodybag routine.
  • On-Campus videos on Youtube
  • Air-conditioned residence halls a lá NTU's Hall 13 and Hall 16

What we want less of

  • Merciless carpark gentries popping up all over campus
  • Fee hikes
  • Hostile school admin staff

Nightlife

Most Popular Club for Legit Tertiary Bashes - Zouk

As testament to its legacy, Zouk has never lost their magic touch to lure generations to come. Friendly staff, cosy ambience and great music, we look forward to more bashes at the chamber of cool.

Favourite ChillOut Joint- 3-way tie between Timbre, WalaWala's and Barcelona

Live bands have always been a favourite for students.

Timbre, with its close proximity to SMU, has been drawing undergrads to its central locale in the bohemian district at Armenian Street.

Walawala, in the west, needs no introduction with both current students and alumni of both NTU and NUS congregating regularly.

Barcelona is a new favourite, particularly due to the resident band's expansive undergrad network. For the uninitiated, Singapore Idol 2006 darling Jonathan Leong fronts the resident band Reverie at the nightspot. Situated at Mohamed Sultan and in close proximity to popular undergraduate hangout Dbl O, the pub that usually draws PMEBs is witnessing a rejuvenation in its clientele. We only gripe that the drinks aren't at student concessions!

What we want more of

What we want less of

  • drunk freshies in Phuture
  • uninhibited, unrestrained, shameless bodygrinding on the dancefloor in poor taste

Where we would like to see parties happen

  • SMU's rooftop
  • NTU's spanking new School of Art, Design and Media

Lifestyle

Most Popular Travel destination - Bangkok

Cheap airfare, smorgasbord of good food, awesome shopping and nightspots have lured varsity students of all categories to the land of wide open smiles - and some say open legs too.

Most Popular Air Carrier - Tiger Airways

With cheep cheep airfares to popular destinations such as Bangkok and Phuket, students spare no time (even during the semester) in hopping on the next plane. Their latest 2-cent promotion has spared no mercy in getting our panties tied up in knots!

New Favourite Hangout - Board games cafe (Settlers Cafe and Minds Cafe)

When students used to flock to the nearest Kbox, the be-spectacled herd has recently shifted to wholesome - and sometimes even enriching - past times. With a myriad of games including our favourite Cranium, students spend endless hours at these casual, affordable hangouts strewn all over the island.

Where you can spot students

  • NTU: Jurong Point
  • NUS: Holland Village
  • SMU: SMU - Find it common when almost everyone you know from SMU has to spend most days AND nights doing project work IN SCHOOL?

What we'd like more of

  • Music and sport festivals for students
  • school grants for independent student events

What we'd like less of

  • Endlessly long bus lines at Boon Lay and Clementi Bus Interchange
  • The requirement for public entertainment licenses and permits
  • School budgets as tight as a virgin cow's rectum

What we'd like to see

  • Spring break in Bali/Bintan
The college kids in America have Spring Break in Tijuana, Mexico sponsored by the likes of MTV and Coca Cola that probably single-handedly supported the Mexican economy. We say its time we have a regional party destination to call our own.
