The Unofficial NUS Hall Guide

We got so sick of the lack of hall information that we decided to seek out real information that matters for freshmen. We wanted to present the real deal about hall living and so we gathered the hall committees and probe them zealously to get the low-down on hall gossips, legends, babes and cute guys. While not all halls have been forth-coming, we nevertheless manage to consolidate something sustantial.

Eusoff Hall (EH) - The Up and Coming Sports Hall

History:

EH was founded as Eusoff College in 1958 at the Bukit Timah Campus of the University of Singapore as the first and only university hall of residence for women. In 1988, the Nassim Wing of Eusoff College moved to the Kent Ridge Campus to establish EH.

EH is situated at the southern slope of the Kent Ridge Campus, close to the Arts & Social Sciences Faculty, the Law Faculty and the School of Business.

IHG colour:

Yellow

Culture:

Up and coming Sports Hall of NUS, EH is the lastest overall IHG Champion.

Intense rivalry with Temasek Hall.

Late night hot-spots:

Eusoffians are always spotted at Fong Seng or the Cheese Prata Shop. A 'secret' passage way sited at the back of EH brings hall mates to Fong Seng - our supper haven!

Good lookers:
Brian Charles Higgs, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences 1.
Royston Toh, former Temasek JC "Prom King".

Hush hush:

EH seems to be notorious for an alternative form of sports. Couples have been sighted making out in the rooms, block lounge or even inbathroom cubicles. Take this with a pinch of salt. It's hear-say.

Kent Ridge Hall (KR) - The Culture Hall

History:

In 1981, the hall was known as King Edward at Kent Ridge, or KEKR to preserve the legacy of King Edward VII Hall, then at Sepoy Lines. When KE VII was subsequently moved to the current NUS campus, the hall was renamed Kent Ridge Hall.

The hall recently moved to its new premise at the junction of Kent Ridge Drive and Heng Mui Keng Terrace, close to the Faculties of Business Administration, Law and the Arts and Social Sciences. Its spanking new compound boasts of dance and music studios with superb acoustics, an air-conditioned gym and a multi-purpose air-conditioned hall. In addition, each block has its own rooftop courtyards with partial sea-views.

IHG colour:

Blue

Culture:

Noted for its cultural achievements, KR residents can be proud of the hall's 6 performance groups, collectively known as the K6, which consist of the Rockers (Rock band), KRX (drama), KR Dancers, KR A Cappella, Choir and Inspire (songwriters). Many of these groups send representatives to clinch prestigious awards in national or tertiary competitions.

Prominent:

The Rachels from KR is the winner of the Best Composition Award at last year's JamX, a inter-tertiary jam band competition.

Late night hot-spots:

The rooftops where hall mates gather for nightly chats, drinks and supper.

Good lookers:

Ee Tat Xin. IVP dragon boater, Science 4, formerly of Hwa Chong JC
Yap Shili, Industrial Systems Engineering 2 and part of award winning jam band - The Rachels
Ng Pei Choo, Ms Kent Ridge 03/04, Engineering 3, formerly National JC
Patricia Lee, Business 3, formerly of Raffles JC.

Hush hush:

The hall recently moved to its new premise but we have spooky tales to tell about the old hall in Kent Ridge Crescent. Walk up to the ground floor of block B at old KR and you'll find an old, run-down door that opens up to nowhere but an open field. Legend has it that residents used to hear spine-chilling ghastly wails and cries at night.

Rumoured to be the wails of a female spirit who was roaming the area to look for her child, it got so disturbing that the hall office hired Chinese bomohs to stop the wailings. The bomohs instructed the hall to build a door which opens up to the direction where the spirit could find her child.

Sheares Hall (SH)

History:

The histroy of Sheares Hall goes back half a century to the days of University of Singapore and University of Malaya. Its predecessor hall was Dunearn Road Hostels.

Sheares moved recently to its current premise at Heng Mui Keng Terrace, opposite Lee Kwan Yew School of Public Policy.

IHG colour:

Orange

Culture:

Good balance between culture and sports

  • Commendable hall choir & A Cappella group
  • Strong in basketball and volleyball

Prominent:

The Sheares Hall Rag and Flag float won the Chancellor's Shield during Rag and Flag 2005 and performed at Chingay Parade 2005.

Late night hot-spots:

The dining hall. With a supper stall that serves such great food, no one bothers to go out? Their chicken naan and fried rice are way too irresistible.

Good lookers:

Bona, Science 2, Mr Sheares 06
Esther Tan, FASS 1, Ms Sheares 06

Hush hush:

Noise generated by rowdy residents has created much tension between residents of Sheares and neighbour KR. The complaints and accusations heightened when noise levels become unbearable late at night.

Despite occasional blemishes, Sheares and KR are friendly neighbours most of the time. The two halls have their very own 'exchange programme' where the blocks from Sheares would visit their corresponding blocks in KR over the Mooncake Festival every year. This is also the opportunity for guys from each hall to seek out girls from the other hall.

Raffles Hall (RH)

History:

Originally located along Nassim Road, Bukit Timah, the hall moved to the current NUS campus at Kent Ridge in 1985.

Raffles Hall is surrounded by the University Cultural Centre, Faculty of Engineering and Yusof Ishak House.

IHG colour:

Green

Culture:

Raffles Hall offers the afternoon tea as part of their meal plan, thus creating the popular "Raffles tea-time", the time when Rafflesians will head back to hall in between the lectures for tea and snacks.

The Rafflesians practise a ritual of rising a burnt phoenix from the ashes during their orientation camps. However, for the sake of safety, the practice has evolved. The phoenix is now coated with luminous paint and a glowing phoenix is raised instead.

Late night hot-spots:

  • Munchie Monkey
  • Subway
  • Tasty Corner, a stall in the communal hall that sells supper

Good lookers:

Grace Khoo, Raffles Hall netballer & Musical Director for the upcoming Hall production

King Edward VII (KEVII)

History:

Built in 1987, King Edward VII Hall straddles along the slope of Kent Ridge, overlooking Prince George's Park and the shuttle bus terminal. KE VII is famous, or rather infamous, for the countless number of steps leading to the hall.

IHG colour:

Black

Late night hot-spots:

  • café in t Prince George's Park Residences (PGP) - It's so dark and secluded here that it's probably safer for residents to just stay in hall.

Good lookers:

Bilin, formerly of Temasek JC

Hush hush:

KE VII, located on the slopes connecting Science Faculty and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine often gives residents the creeps because of the spooky tales that originates from the area.

Years back, an NUS undergraduate slipped and fell to his death down the steep slope surrounding KEVII's backyard. One version of the tale depicts that he was an undergarment thief while another version of the ghastly tale has him as a peeping tom. Nevermind what he did, he somehow got discovered and started running to escape the law. Later, stories about the area started streaming out and legend has it that the slope is haunted by the spirit who just can't rest in peace.

Temasek Hall (TH) - The Original Sports Hall

History:

Situated near the Arts, Business Administration and Law Faculties, TH is a hall with a long and proud history of sporting excellence. Where others call it Hostel, the Temasek residents call it Home.

IHG colour:

White

Culture:

TH has dominated the NUS sports scene. Overall IHG Champions since 1991, this proud tradition has only been broken twice, in the 1997/1998 season and 2005/2006 season.

Late night hot-spots:

TH residents are often spotted with their rivals from EH at Fong Seng. After the intense competition in the courts, it's time to make peace and be friends again over iced milo and prata.

Good lookers:

Koh Jia Jie & Xu Yi Wen, both FASS Year 1

Hush hush:

TH dancers seem to be attracting much attention. During a combined hall dance performance (Dance Uncensored) last year, they almost stripped to their skin.
