The Unofficial
NUS Hall Guide
We got so sick of the lack of hall information that we decided to seek out
real information that matters for freshmen. We wanted to present the real deal
about hall living and so we gathered the hall committees and probe them zealously
to get the low-down on hall gossips, legends, babes and cute guys. While not
all halls have been forth-coming, we nevertheless manage to consolidate something
sustantial.
| Eusoff
Hall (EH) - The Up and Coming Sports Hall |
|
History:
EH
was founded as Eusoff College in 1958 at the Bukit Timah Campus of the

Ridge Campus to establish EH.
EH is situated at the southern slope of the Kent Ridge Campus, close

Hush hush:
EH seems to be notorious for an alternative form of sports. Couples have
been sighted making out in the rooms, block lounge or even inbathroom
cubicles. Take this with a pinch of salt. It's hear-say.

| Kent
Ridge Hall (KR) - The Culture Hall |
|
History:
In
1981, the hall was known as King Edward at Kent Ridge, or KEKR to preserve
the legacy of King Edward VII Hall, then at Sepoy Lines. When KE VII was
subsequently moved to the current NUS campus, the hall was renamed Kent
Ridge Hall.
The hall recently moved to its new premise at the junction of Kent Ridge
Drive and Heng Mui Keng Terrace, close to the Faculties of Business Administration,
Law and the Arts and Social Sciences. Its spanking new compound boasts
of dance and music studios with superb acoustics, an air-conditioned gym
and a multi-purpose air-conditioned hall. In addition, each block has
its own rooftop courtyards with partial sea-views.

Hush hush:
The hall recently moved to its new premise but we have spooky tales to
tell about the old hall in Kent Ridge Crescent. Walk up to the ground
floor of block B at old KR and you'll find an old, run-down door that
opens up to nowhere but an open field. Legend has it that residents used
to hear spine-chilling ghastly wails and cries at night.
Rumoured to be the wails of a female spirit who was roaming the area
to look for her child, it got so disturbing that the hall office hired
Chinese bomohs to stop the wailings. The bomohs instructed the hall to
build a door which opens up to the direction where the spirit could find
her child.

| Sheares

The
histroy of Sheares Hall goes back half a century to the days of University
of Singapore and University of Malaya. Its predecessor hall was Dunearn
Road Hostels.
Sheares moved recently to its current premise at Heng Mui Keng Terrace,
opposite Lee Kwan Yew School of Public Policy.

one bothers to go out? Their chicken naan and fried rice are way too irresistible.

Hush hush:
Noise generated by rowdy residents has created much tension between residents
of Sheares and neighbour KR. The complaints and accusations heightened
when noise levels become unbearable late at night.
Despite occasional blemishes, Sheares and KR are friendly neighbours
most of the time. The two halls have their very own 'exchange programme'
where the blocks from Sheares would visit their corresponding blocks in
KR over the Mooncake Festival every year. This is also the opportunity
for guys from each hall to seek out girls from the other hall.

| Raffles
Hall (RH) |
|
History:
Originally
located along Nassim Road, Bukit Timah, the hall moved to the current
NUS campus at Kent Ridge in 1985.
Raffles Hall is surrounded by the University Cultural Centre, Faculty
of Engineering and Yusof Ishak House.

|
|
|
Culture:
Raffles Hall offers the afternoon tea as part of their meal plan, thus
creating the popular "Raffles tea-time", the time when Rafflesians
will head back to hall in between the lectures for tea and snacks.
The Rafflesians practise a ritual of rising a burnt phoenix from the
ashes during their orientation camps. However, for the sake of safety,
the practice has evolved. The phoenix is now coated with luminous paint
and a glowing phoenix is raised instead.

|
Hush hush:
KE VII, located on the slopes connecting Science Faculty and Yong Loo
Lin School of Medicine often gives residents the creeps because of the
spooky tales that originates from the area.
Years back, an NUS undergraduate slipped and fell to his death down the
steep slope surrounding KEVII's backyard. One version of the tale depicts
that he was an undergarment thief while another version of the ghastly
tale has him as a peeping tom. Nevermind what he did, he somehow got discovered
and started running to escape the law. Later, stories about the area started
streaming out and legend has it that the slope is haunted by the spirit
who just can't rest in peace.
