While
you were hanging out in the sleepy pubs along Holland Village on a lonely Thursday
night feeling enervated and lethargic, the sell-out SIM-UOL bash at China Black
was only beginning to heat up! The organizers claimed that more than 1200 party
goers congregated at the Pacific Plaza club. As a result, many people who were
unable to get tickets earlier were turned away at the door.
Just
like any other school/faculty bash, the highlight of the night has to be the
much anticipated SIM-UOL pageant. Probably the only event this year that features
the best lookers of the Clementi campus, support for the bash was tremendous
as friends of the pageant contestants camped at the club in hordes.
The
programme line-up was prosaic. Dominated by a fashion showcase of the event's
main sponsors, the show was all about the contestants parading in everything
the sponsors have to offer, from super low-waist hip-hugging short skirts to
bare-back formal evening gowns.
The
female contestants strutted onto stage each looked skinnier than the next. It
was a parade of stick-insects barely camouflaged by the tiny pieces of cloth
they wore. Naturally, this attracted much howling from hormone-raging guys and
whispers of envy from jealous ladies.
The girls must have been through numerous catwalk practices as they managed
to stroll confidently along the make-shift runway in heels without looking like
nervous students waiting to fall flat on their faces.
The men were, well, mostly muscles. Mostly uninhibited, the boys made comedian
(sometimes dorky) poses on the runway which brought on catcalls and laughter.

The
crowd, made up mostly of SIM students were immensely enthusiastic.
Just like the audience of numerous idol-wannabe contests on TV, many party
goers came equipped wth glow-in-the-light placards and even more sportingly
compete in beer drinking competitions till they retched on stage! (Ok maybe
the last part was not so glamorous but three hoots go to the lady who puked
on stage!)
We
received mixed responses from the party goers on the party. Kenni (20) said
the pageant was mostly "bimbos and muscles", referring to how most
of the contestants flopped the Q and A segment.
On the other hand, Brad, last year's Mr. SIM felt this bash was definitely
more fun and better organised than the previous one. And why not? After all,
the students of SIM-UOL only have this one official bash to look forward to
this year.
To be honest, it is barely possible to discern one bash from the other especially
with pageants tailored to suit needs of sponsors. The success of the SIM bash
then can only be attributed to the tremendous turnout and the boisterous patrons,
eager for fun and who can forget, drinks!
