A singer, a lyricist and a producer team up to make good music and showcase their works online. Dayvid, Kewei and Anne make up Project DIY (www.projectdiy.net), a website which they use to release music and connect fans. However, please do not even think about slapping the band sticker onto them. Project DIY is simply a platform for these young individuals to get together to create music and let themselves be heard.

Dayvid is responsible for composition, production and arrangement. Most of the lyrics to his songs are penned by Anne while Kewei croons the melodies.

For Anne, 21, a 3rd year Internet Computing student from Temasek Polytechnic, she wrote her first song after a failed romance. She felt so deeply about the failed relationship that she started to pen her emotions and thoughts into poetry and little stories. According to her, penning lyrics provides her with an outlet to vent her emotions from life encounters and experience. She was quick to dispel any suspicion that a song she co-wrote - I Can't Play That Funky Music which contains rants on drug use, is about her experience with illicit drugs.

Dayvid, 23, started composing songs when he was 16. Inspired by Taiwanese singer David Tao, he produces music from a fully equipped recording studio at home and has performed in gigs with the who's who of the Chinese music scene. The keyboardist and guitarist often laments that there is too much commercialism in the industry and wishes for "more originality and creativity".

Never one who minces his words, Dayvid has been left frustrated with the dismal state of the local Chinese music market where the content of every commercially successful production and composition seems to be driven by romance. He blames it on the lack of courage. "Singaporeans just do not dare to be different, and are uncomfortable trying new things", he said. "Still, there are 'many bedroom musicians in Singapore' who are often too shy to showcase their works to the world. They shouldn't be hiding and must come out of the closet."

Kewei, with her sweet-girl-next-door smile, is the designated vocalist of the creative Anne and Dayrid. A final year Communications Student of NTU, the 22-year-old croons with lots of passion in her raw, yet naively innocent voice. With fans and stalkers from as far as Taiwan, Kewei's putting both feet firmly rooted to reality. She knows that a singing contract with a major label is still far away.

The members of Project DIY are thrilled and encouraged by the positive and enthusiastic response to their music and thus are optimistic about the future.

Anne hopes for more commercial success as a song writer (she has already penned a song for a major release), while Kewei hopes to gain more exposure via their website and secure a singing contract with a major record label. Dayvid, who recently performed with Sylvester Sim, wants to make his own film eventually, but will focus on making his music career take off.

We were speaking to 3 young individuals, each with talents in their own right, coming together to produce something which they've developed a strong passion for. Craving to make a difference and resist conforming to convention, they have struggled to pop themselves above the herd. However difficult it may seem, the more ordinary the herd is, the more the people who dare to be different stand out.

You are listening to a medley of Project DIY's recent works.
