Of all the participants in the 2002 Miss Singapore-Universe pag- eant, Joanne Peh probably has the most exposure on television.

From one of MediaCorp Channel 8's highest viewership drama serials "The Beautiful Connection", to infotainment programme City Beat, and variety show PSC Nite, the 19-year-old has been seen in them all .

Despite her various appearances on local TV, the bubbly School of Communication and Information (SCI) first-year student thought that students could not recognise her when they saw her in campus.

However, Peh added that people might have started to notice her after co-hosting PSC Nite. "Maybe because there are reports of me being in NTU, so people started to realise, 'Oh yah, this girl is from NTU.'"

Crowned Miss Elegant and Miss Personality in the Miss Singapore Universe pageant, Peh reiterated that not much has changed in her life.

"People close to me are indifferent about it, because when they first got to know me, I was just a student, like you and I," she said.

This nonchalance is translated into confidence for the co-hosting stint in live shows like PSC Nite. The spunky gal said that she was not daunted by the idea of working with veteran MediaCorp artiste, Mr Chen Shucheng, as he had been very helpful in guiding her along.

Though her co-host, affectionately referred to as "Chen Da-ge" or Big Brother Chen, is 34 years older than Peh, the first-time host did not think the big age difference was a problem.

She explained: " People told me I look mature on TV so I think it's okay."

Peh reckoned that her ability to host with ease also comes partly as a result of her pageant experience.

She said: "Coming from the pageant, I have a feel of what a live show is about, I have a gauge of how big the crowd is, so I wasn't so intimidated when I started hosting the PSC Nite."

"I was the head prefect in my secondary school and I took part in storytelling when I was younger, so it prepared me to speak up," she added.

The young co-host tried to learn from her mistakes when she got tongue-tied. "I will think about the mistakes, and then bear them in mind for the next episode," said the 1.73m tall lass.

As the co-host of a variety gameshow, she had to appear in quirky personas such as Foxxy Cleopatra from the movie Austin Powers.

While she did get people telling her that the outfits looked terrible, the adventurous girl accepted all criticisms in stride as she felt that it was important for an artiste to learn to be versatile.

Adventurous though she might be, Peh draws the line when it comes to acting as some unsavoury characters, like a prostitute or slut.

"I definitely like roles that are more 'zheng pai' (upright), not that I can't act as the villain but I'll avoid certain roles because after all I'm still a student and there is this image I need to keep up," said Peh.

She revealed that while there is talk about a possible contract with MediaCorp, nothing is definite at the moment.

She added: "Since school is starting soon, I told them (MediaCorp) that I want to concentrate on my studies so they can't really use me during term time."

Peh had joined SCI with aspirations to become a journalist. "Now, I'm not so sure," she said.

With more opportunities to come into contact with journalists due to her newfound fame, she realised the market in Singapore is actually quite small for journalism.

Though the budding star is considering a career in showbiz, she feels that luck plays an important factor in this industry. Hence she is keeping her options open - concentrate on her studies but sees what comes along her way.

"I think it's a lot about chances. If the chance comes along, I will definitely make the most out of it," said Peh.

Miss Elegant is Miss Cleanliness too

Off screen, the lanky Hall One hostellite does not look a day older than her 19 years.

Sporting jeans that were wet at the hem, she explained that she was cleaning up her room for the start of school, thus wetting her jeans. Miss Elegant or not, she does her fair share of cleaning.

"One thing I hate most about hall is the ants. I see them start crawling and I feel itchy all over," complained the stickler for cleanliness. After her afternoon of cleaning work, she proudly proclaimed her room as being ' spick and span'.

Cleaning duties aside, juggling her busy schedule of school, hosting and acting leaves the ex-head prefect of Temasek Secondary School with little spare time.

"I hardly have much time for leisure these days, especially when I have to do act and study. When I'm back at my hostel room, I just do my schoolwork and whatever little time left is spent going online," she said.

Because of this, the former Victoria Junior College student does not participate actively in NTU activities. While she is in the main committee for her hall's freshman orientation camp and some NTU sub-committees, she lamented that she could not spend as much time on them as she had wanted to.

"Now, I can't give my full attention to ECAs because sometimes, I have to miss meetings due to filming or some interview," she added.
