Ask 21 year-old Beatrice Tan the reason behind her transformation
from introvert to extrovert, and she'll tell you it's thanks to her mom
and teacher. At first glance, it is hard to believe that this gregarious
young lady, with cheekbones so high a la Fann Wong, was once "shy".
"Shy"
is certainly irrelevant in the "describe-Beatrice's-personality"
column now. Leaning forward enthusiastically as we chat, the avid blogger's
livejournal page records a respectable 3,000 hits daily as she updates
her blog regularly with all things she loves. Not surprising, as the I-spend-a-lot-of-time-on-the-computer
sports enthusiast enjoys making photo collages and sharing them on her
blog. The hobby has attracted the attention of commercial sponsors and
subsequently, the coveted role of blogger ambassador for several well-known
brands.
One of eight bloggers of the Marjolica Marjoca brand (the cosmetics
brand launched with great fanfare at Watsons), she was also invited
to blog for Tampines 1, a new sub-urban shopping mall in the east.
While mere mortals like us were clocking precious minutes queuing up in
order to walk the hallowed grounds of Uniqlo, the lucky lass was given
a media preview of Tampines 1, which included a mall tour. She
also received free shopping vouchers which made us very jealous.

The Temasek Polytechnic alumnus is as comfortable with a group of friends
as she is alone. Relishing the simplicity of doing things together with
her significant others, her family, friends and her trusty computer take
top three spots in her life, even if her schedule is packed with organising
the NUS Bizad Jam & Hop in September this year. She is certainly no
greenhorn to event management, having organised freshmen orientations
and loving the networking opportunities that come with it.

A
self-confessed mommy's girl ( "I tell Mom everything that's happening
in my life- she's like my bestfriend, my soulmate, my teacher, my light,
my mother"), Beatrice is looking to make career headway in the areas
of fashion marketing, retailing or advertising, a career that keeps her
mobile and on her feet, instead of a nine-to-five job that she says would
leave her tired after a long day of work, with neither time for her family
or herself. Her fashion purchases, inspired by Pan-Asians, magazines and
celebrities, come without the hefty price tags and are instead "cheap
and good." I like her already.
Decked in a LBD and looking the picture of health with sun-kissed skin
that looks like she just returned from Bali, Beatrice is ready for a night
out with her pals. It's hard to believe that the Gossip Girl fan does
all that she does, and still manages to be a full-time undergraduate.
I ask her how she survives. "Mix around, join school events and constant
mugging. You have to understand what to do and (if the need arises), to
space out."
Most comfortable in sundresses and flip-flops, the summer girl will soon
celebrate her 21st birthday. She tells me, with all seriousness, that
she is not looking forward to 21. "21 is a new stage of life. You
have to be committed and there is responsibility. At 20, you are still
carefree." And as the conversation lingers into the evening, I get
the feeling that, 21 or not, it's going to be nearly impossible to cramp
her style, this one.
