"The plotline is mainly our scriptwriters’ (Eva and Kim) ideas. According to Eva, it came to her during caffeine high while researching non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma treatment options. Ahem. But well for me, this production is really about the suspension of disbelief. Sometimes reality just doesn’t cut it, and you need to run away into the world where NOTHING MAKES SENSE, so that you can somehow figure things out your own way. And I hope people leave wishing that they too had imaginary friends (I know I did. His name was Komdiar and he was a monkey) !" - Shariza Bte Shari , 22, FASS Year 3, Creative producer.

John always had a thing for the environment. As a newly appointed Valedictorian of his faculty, John seems destined for a brilliant future. With the perfect job opportunity and the perfect girlfriend, the perfect life seems to be a stone's throw away.

John's carefully plotted path through life takes a sudden turn when an unprecedented visit acts as a rude awakening to his forgotten past. An imaginary friend he was sure he had left behind at the age of thirteen, Alex, has decided to drop in to say "Hi". Only this time, she's not alone. Accompanied by a whole ensemble of new and wacky characters including a seductive cat lady and an imperial army general amongst many others, these figments of his imagination threaten to turn his perfectly ordered world upside down.

As John struggles to manage his newly found "friends" that no one else but him can see, he desperately turns to the man who had helped him once before, his experienced albeit unconventional psychiatrist, Dr Erwitt.

Will he discover the reason behind their return? And can John get rid of this motley bunch for good?

Eusoff Hall Dance Production has been the production to watch amongst annual productions presented by halls of residences in NUS. Where other halls stage either drama or dance concerts separately, Eusoff Hall has managed to combine both!

"No mean feat, but this is the result of years of practice", Creative Producer Shariza Bte Shari, 22, a year 3 undergraduate from Faulty of Arts & Social Sciences proclaimed.

"We've recently started on original music compositions, and we will try to incorporate other aspects like singing and who knows, one day we will burst out a musical extravaganza, entirely student-run!" she said.

Shari wants the wacky story line to leave everyone in stitches. Combined with stellar choreography, this production is slated to make you leave the UCC Hall on Kent Ridge truly tickled and content.

You see studious foreign scholars dancing centre-stage and army regulars sewing costumes as part of the wardrobe department. You see beautiful set pieces, designed and constructed by undergraduates who arrived not being able to differentiate between a screw and a nail but somehow picked up some nifty skills along the way. You also have your typical Chinese-speaking almost ah beng-material boys, dreaming of a little bit of stardom, hamming it up for the very responsive audience, or acting suave in impeccable English.

If you fancy of all the above plus a decent dose of half naked boys, girls with hot bods and a hyper-active producer, attend the Eusoff Hall production on 20 March 2008 at 7.30pm at the University Cultural Centre, Hall at NUS. Tickets at 18 and $25 are available.

Shariza Bte Shari , 22, FASS Year 3, Creative producer.

What's your major in school? How did you get exposed to productions? What do you feel passionate about hall productions?

My major is Psychology. I joined the Drama Club in school because my sister was in a drama club and I was such an aimless prepubescent teen who didn’t know what to do with life. And that hooked me, because I realised I’m a sucker for the stage. Taking Theatre Studies as a formal subject in Junior College opened my eyes to the theatre on a deeper level, and by the time I came into hall, I knew what I wanted to do. The special thing about this production is that it’s not just limited to thespians or dancers who perform, somehow people from all walks of life managed to come together and put up a fabulous performance year after year.

Give us 3 reasons why this production is a must-go!

Half naked boys, girls with hot bods and, uh, me.

Valerie Vincent, 23, Business Year 3, Director

What's your role in the production? What are your responsibilities?

My role is to ensure that the entire play makes sense and has a cohesive theme. I work mainly with the actors however I also worked extensively with the sets, wardrobe, lights and sounds team during the idea/concept generation stage. Throughout the entire process, it is very important for the director (as well as the producers) to think about the ‘audience appeal’ ofr entire play. We really wanted to make it appealling to a wide range of people and we worked really hard to make that possible.

What's your major in school? How did you get exposed to productions? What do you feel passionate about hall productions?

I’m a marketing major at the School of Business. I absolutely love what I do. But, I’ve been a performer since I was 15. So, theatre & dance have always been a part of me. I absolutely love it when I merge my two worlds together. I love bringing dramatics to my business presentations as well as applying my marketing knowledge to the stage. About our hall production? I’ve been a part of it since my first year and I’ve learnt so much from it. I put my heart & soul into it every single year and this year is CERTAINLY no exception.

What happens during rehearsals?

We usually have our rehearsals around hall. I usually break it down by scene and perfect it from there. However, sometime I like to have fun and make the actors do silly things like act in a place where a lot of random people can see them. This gives me a lot of pleasure! The actors are an amazing bunch of people and the mood is usually good during rehearsals. I count myself lucky to be able to work with some of the most talented people I know.

How are costumes and props acquired?

Most of the things you see on stage are made especially for the production. Our wardrobe designers (Esther & Si Hui) were instrumental in bringing our characters to life by making amazing pieces for our actors. Also, for props I’ve got to hand it to our sets team (Special mention to Joon Kit & Hong Jin) who helped come up with ideas and made everything from scratch! I don’t want to give too much away…but there is a large sinister looking object sitting in the sets area that is instrumental to the plot of the play. It’s beautifully designed, but you have to come to the show to know what it is!

Give us 3 reasons why this production is a must-go!

1. Everyone in our production is drop-dead-gorgeous (I am NOT joking about this)
2. The dances are amazing!
3. The storyline/plot will definitely leave you thinking about society and what we stereotype as right & wrong.
4. It’s absolutely… MAGICAL!

Alison Cheng, 20, FASS Year 1, acting as Claire (girlfriend).

Describe your character in the play.

Claire is a thoughtful, loving, intelligent girl-next-door who really just wants to have fun and spend time with her best (boy)friend, John.

If there's something you can create for your charcter, what would it be?

I'd give her a cute little cupcake for being so sweet. Or maybe create a pair of glasses with which she could see John's imaginary friends, then she wouldn't feel so left out.

How alike is your real life persona from the one in the play?

We're alike in the sense that we just wanna have fun and require a lot of support and trust when it comes to a relationship. Different in that... I don't have a boyfriend with imaginary friends?

What's your major in school? How did you get exposed to productions?

I major in Psychology.

My mum used to take me to a lot of plays and musicals when I was young so that started my interest in the stage and performing. I've been dancing for the longest time ever. But it was only in JC that I started acting and really fell in love with it! I took Theatre Studies & Drama as an A level subject. It feels great working together with people you live with (almost family) and really seeing everyone putting in their best for the production.

What happens during rehearsals?

We warm up, do a run through, have debrief and then do another run and another and another! (Val the slave driver director!) But in between all that there's a lot of fooling around and having fun of course! We go around telling stupid jokes (some of which you'll hear in the play), doing stupid things ( you might just see some in the play as well).
