Forget the short skirts, the dashing getup that party-goers adorn as
a usual sight at the doors of Zouk - what greeted us instead were suspenders,
short tailored pants (and complimentary hairy legs, thank you very much),
centre-partings and massive glasses. It seemed as though the geeks from
NUS were freed from campus and prowling the grounds of Zouk as they embraced
the annual NUSSU Bash - Geek vs Glam this year.

As we entered, packets of goodies were shoved into our hands, full of
discount coupons and LG product brochures. Little did we know that the
grand prize of the night is an LG Renoir! With such great sponsors, including
LA Splash Cosmetics, Bonafides, Butt Cheeks and LG, it is of no wonder
that the turn-up was said to be one of the best with over 1000 tickets
sold! Even some of our Swedish friends
came to join in the fun.
The opening began with spectacular performance from 11th Hour. The charming
boys presented with the audience tunes of "Over You" by Chris
Daughtry, "Angels and Devils" by Dishwala.

Of course, what better way to rah-rah the crowd than to have 14 winners of faculty pageants across NUS strut their stuff.
"I was really nervous during this segment because the rest of the
male contestants have better bodies than I do," said M1, Moses Khoo,
from the Faculty of Science. M7, Ian Loo from the School of Design and
Environment, conjured the loudest response with chantings of "Cobra!
Cobra!" from his, ahem, very kind, supporters.
The girls lit up the stage with beachwear from Butt Cheeks and other gorgeous dresses and suits. F6 Tracce Chua, from the
Faculty of Arts, spiced up the walkway with a red-hot dress. The guys, on the other hand, tickled the audience with "geek-wear",
totally contrary to the hot beachwear - with the all-famous suspenders,
knee-length socks and what not. The hunky images took a dip as the contestants
skipped and wobbled down the aisle, making silly faces and actions.

But what made the crowd roar with laughter was the question-and-answer
section. The contestants were asked to choose an adjective, and use the
adjective to answer a chosen question. When asked, "If you could
spend one day as a member of the opposite sex, what would you do?"
quick-witted M5 Roy Tan from the Faculty of Medicine, sang his woes and
jokes of visiting toilets. We agreed that it was a very clever attempt
indeed, but Roy, please brush up on those vocals. The next segment on
"Geek pick-up lines" drove the crowd crazy, Phrases like "You
are like a dictionary
you add meaning to my life"; "I
am like your Rubik cube
the more you play with me, the harder I get".
Oh boy, that really left the audience in stitches.

| "I am speechless and very shocked, but I am very happy. I really
did not expect myself to win, because I felt that all the girls did
very well. I really enjoyed myself through the preparations because
we encouraged each other and gave each other advice during the process."

The audience had to compete in beer-drinking and pretty challenging spelling
contests. Albert Liang, a Year 2 student from Architecture, shared with
us his experience on stage and his overall impression of the event. "The
girls are quite pretty and the questions were pretty entertaining. I would
give the event a 6 out of 10."
Other guest performances also included Lucid band whose charisma was
hard to resist, as they presented tunes including "Time is running
out" by Muse. FUYO, the B-Boy group, also gave a spectacular performance
with their amazing b-boy stunts. FUYO is one of the most well-known and
established B-Boy crew in the breaking scene in Singapore.

Many people were rather dissatisfied with the sound system and there were comments that the contestants were stiff lack spontaneity, we thought we should cut the contestants some slack. It was, afterall, in the game of fun! The themed party was a good success and the programme well-planned.
The emcee had been rather entertaining and spontaneous, and did a rather
good job rousing the crowd. Guest performances put up by 11th Hour, Lucid
band and FUYO had been more than spectacular. Many went home with great prizes just
in time for the festivities!
